The Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12×40 (Leupold part #185336) is a 4-12x40mm riflescope with a 1″ main tube and the Hunt-Plex reticle in the second (rear) focal plane. The VX-Freedom is Leupold’s best-value hunting line, with a 3x zoom range and Leupold’s Twilight Light Management System.
Key Features
- 4-12x magnification (3x zoom range) with a 40mm objective
- Second focal plane reticle: stays the same size and easy to see as you zoom
- Waterproof and fogproof, backed by Leupold’s lifetime guarantee
Hunt-Plex Reticle
The Hunt-Plex uses bold, tapered pickets with an open center that is easy to find in low light, plus a fine center line for precise shots at distance or on small targets. The top line tapers without a picket to keep more of the view clear. See the reticle diagram in the product photos.

FAQ
What size scope rings does this scope need?
It has a 1″ main tube, so you need 1″ rings. A good match is the Leupold BackCountry Cross-Slot 1″ Medium Rings, or browse all scope rings.
What does second focal plane (SFP) mean?
The reticle sits behind the magnification lenses, so it stays the same size as you zoom. It stays bold and easy to see at low power, which is why most hunting scopes use it.
